Blue Remembered Hills - Fringe 2008

During the Fringe last year, Edinburgh Theatre Arts packed them in with a sell-out production of Michael Palin's first stage play 'The Weekend'. This year we spotlight the legendary Dennis Potter who revolutionised TV drama with his highly imaginative and innovative series of plays, including: 'Pennies from Heaven', 'The Singing Detective' etc. 'Blue Remembered Hills' burst onto the screen in 1979 with a star-studded cast including Helen Mirren, Colin Welland and John Bird. Seven children, played by adult actors, play, fantasise, fight and swagger through a long summer afternoon during the Second World War. Potter is playing games with the title of the piece. This is not a cosy, nostaligic trip down memory lane but a hard-hitting play that reflects the innocent cruelty of children. A play about yesterday for today and tomorrow. Potter ranges over topical subjects such as bullying and child abuse while capturing the joy and fun of childhood. He had an aversion to child actors, by which he meant the precocious little monsters pushed into show business by ambitious parents. But his main reason for choosing to have adult actors play the children was because he didn't want the emotions portrayed in the piece to be softened or distanced by 'the presence of young limbs, fresh eyes and falsetto voices'. In this stage adaptaion the play's impact is heightened by the shared experience between actors and audience that is unique to live theatre.
