Blue Remembered Hills

Blue Remembered Hills

Following another successful and sell out Fringe run for 2008, the Edinburgh Theatre Arts production of Dennis Potter's classic, The Blue Remembered Hills went on to win the 2008 Fleetwood Drama Festival, scooping both Best Director and Best Stage Presentation.

'Blue Remembered Hills' burst onto the screen in 1979 with a star-studded cast including Helen Mirren, Colin Welland and John Bird.

Seven children, played by adult actors, play, fantasise, fight and swagger through a long summer afternoon during the Second World War.  Potter is playing games with the title of the piece.  This is not a cosy, nostaligic trip down memory lane but a hard-hitting play that reflects the innocent cruelty of children.  A play about yesterday for today and tomorrow.  Potter ranges over topical subjects such as bullying and child abuse while capturing the joy and fun of childhood.  He had an aversion to child actors, by which he meant the precocious little monsters pushed into show business by ambitious parents.  But his main reason for choosing to have adult actors play the children was because he didn't want the emotions portrayed in the piece to be softened or distanced by 'the presence of young limbs, fresh eyes and falsetto voices'.

In this stage adaptaion the play's impact is heightened by the shared experience between actors and audience that is unique to live theatre.
